Uncanny X-men 501 Review (by Adrian)
Uncanny has been in a sort of anti-plot limbo ever since Messiah Complex finished. The comic was stuck for a few months waiting for a restart that had to coincide with the major milestone that was #500. And then 500 came along and had to be something of a tribute issue, albeit and oversized one containing some very interesting plot points.
But finally, after months of waiting we’ve got a story arc in Uncanny X-Men. And I like it.
Like most first arcs it takes time for all the characters to get into the story but that gives us some great character moments.
Beast, in a good mood since perhaps the beginning of Morrison’s New X-Men run, is practically buzzing with energy (and not just scientific curiosity energy).
Scott and Emma, once again getting it on like a couple of teenagers, are acting more and more like a happy couple rather than the brooding and dour pair of the pre MCX world.
Wolverine and Kurt are back to their playful jibes and it is good to see this old duo getting some of their groove back.
It should be noted that these things are showing up in other X-books as well, most notably Astonishing X-Men, which clearly indicates that there’s a very broad editorial push for this stuff. I for one am glad to see the X-Men enjoy themselves.
The fun can’t stick around forever though and soon enough the team are faced with a new crisis. Here too we can see the new direction clearly defined. Presented with a threat, Cyclops immediately puts a plan into action and it is executed with such efficiency that you really do get the impression that the X-Men are more than just a superhero team. Now they’re the mutant police, protecting their interests in the most direct way possible.
I’m really excited about this new direction. I’m loving the take charge Cyclops and the interplay between the characters is outstanding. I can’t get enough of it.
