A New X-Men Movie in 2010?
Variety.com reports that 20th Century Fox has contacted “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Swartz to write a new movie called “X-Men: First Class”:

From Variety.com:
Twentieth Century Fox is gearing up to continue its “X-Men” franchise with a younger set of mutants.
Studio has tapped “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz to write “X-Men: First Class.”
Schwartz, the creator and exec producer of CW’s teen sudser hit as well as Fox’s youth-centric “The OC” and NBC’s “Chuck,” is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide.
Writing assignment has also included the possibility of directing the pic, but so far Schwartz has opted not to take the helm.
Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all three “X-Men” pics, as well as next summer’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” is producing “First Class” alongside “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” scribe Simon Kinberg.
Fox is keeping quiet on plans and declined to confirm details of the project. The studio has been considering ways to continue its successful series of “X-Men” movies after the third installment, the Brett Ratner-helmed “X-Men: The Last Stand,” collected $459 million in 2006.
Fox has been leaning toward using the younger characters introduced in the previous pics in future installments — teenagers with powers taught at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.
Resulting film would likely draw from elements of the Marvel comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics.
Given Hollywood’s penchant for reboots with new actors playing familiar roles, pic could also reintroduce characters. Comicbook revolves around the Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, Angel and Professor X.
Naturally, “First Class” could also result in its own series of sequels.
Pic joins other “X-Men”-related projects already in the works at the studio. Fox is actively developing a standalone “Magneto” pic, as well as considering a “Deadpool” spinoff, based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in “Wolverine.” Shuler Donner is producing “Magneto.”
Regular slate of “X-Men” pics would provide Fox with a reliable series of movies that perform at the B.O. and not repeat a dismal summer sesh like the studio experienced this year.
Although Schwartz has enjoyed smallscreen success, he has yet to crack the world of film with a significant project. He wrote and is attached to direct the coming-of-age comedy “Looking for Alaska” for Paramount.
Tackling a new “X-Men” installment will likely give Schwartz instant credibility within the studio world.
And this “X-Men: First Class” could be incredibly awesome if Fox does it right. Unfortunately, a focus on the younger mutants from the earlier years would mean new actors (no James Marsden! *cries*) and a slim chance of Emma Frost appearing.
Then again, would I really want Emma Frost in an X-Men movie? Fox could easily ruin her reputation as an awesome character!

Wow um erm…How in the world would emma appear in this? She has made no appearance in the X men fist class franchise whatsoever, and even if they did have her appear it probably would ruin her reputation, because shes pretty hard to nail down betweeen her powers and attitude. Though if they made her like her wolverine and the x men ego, i can have that.
As an absolutely unapologetic Gossip Girl fan, I consider this good news. The show treats the adult characters just as delicately as they do the kids, so if they do have senior staff at the movie, I don’t doubt that it would translate well. A heroic Emma Frost appearance though, would seem unlikely should the story focus on 05.
P.S. Doesn’t change the fact that Fox execs are a-holes though. Blocking Watchmen like that…
@Shark - Heh, I guess it’s good news. Since X3 I’ve wanted a reboot of the X-Men. And I want them to make the X-Men dramatic, a soap opera almost (but not quite).
Yeah, what IS going on with Watchmen? It’s coming out, right? It MUST.
@aimeeish - Watchmen will come out. This sort of studio c*blocking has happened before (Bond movies), and money usually solves the problem (doesn’t change the fact that Fox is run by evil a*holes).
Though I’m not exactly jumping with glee at the constant slo-mo and Rorscharch’s need for a lozenge, it’s still like, the only movie I’m looking forward to whatever season it decides to show.
As for the First Class movie, I’ll be happy if they cast everyone as Chace Crawford. Topless. And without pants. Le Sigh.
@Shark - Oh yeah, I realized the slow motion on the trailer…hrm. I am NOT a fan of Frank Miller, by the way. I think he is a sexist pig - just look at the female characters he uses for proof. I really enjoyed the Watchmen graphic novel by Moore, though, which is why I’m excited for the movie.
Rorshach has always had a raspy, deep voice though! Have you heard Alan Moore’s interpretation of Rorschach’s voice? And after seeing Rorschach’s body movements, that was a bit of a disappointment. I’d imagine Rorshach to have very stiff movements.
I do not like Silver Spectre or w/e…she’s a very shallow, weak female character, in my opinion! (And, no, I’m not one of those people who believe every female character should be strong and kick-ass.)
@aimeeish - Hehe, I’ve seen worse than Frank, so I’ll just keep mum on that (is it totally schizophrenic for me to have Italian gorefests like Deep Red sitting beside my Hairspray DVD?).
And I’ve never heard Moore’s depiction of Rory’s speech, but I always envisioned it more whisper-y. Here, he sounded like Batman in TDK; cool in short doses, but weird in soliloquies. The walk though, yeah, I thought he’d be more zombie-ish and limp-y. Like House (who I hate).
I did have fun with mama spectre though. At least she had a valid reason for being shallow. Also, I dislike Ozymandias’ color scheme in the movie. It’s totally not Golden Age.
@Shark - Yes, maybe this will be like Gossip Girl with teenagers going through their college lives, and going through problems like ppl gossiping about them. Even though i love Gossip Girl and the Hills i dont want emma being played by an actress like Blake Lively or any one of those other unsure actresses
@Anthony - I can hear it now: “Spotted, S and E making out in the astral plane. Who knew that marriage counseling could be this hands on? Or should I say, brains on? Be careful S and E, just because the wife is out on a peace mission doesn’t mean she’s above waging war. XOXO Gossip Girl”
Could they make Emma Frost a joint-headmistress? ‘Cause on a poster showing Emma Frost in X-Men Origins: Wolverine , it says “EMMA FROST Head Mistress of Xaviers Institute for the Gifted Youngsters”
@Mikey - Are you sure that wasn’t a fan-made poster?
Nope, said on a website somwhere
@Mikey - Hmm…send me a link, please? :D
I read it on a website ages ago. I don’t know where it is. The website MIGHT have been lying. I’ll look for it and send you it if I find it.
Oh, btw, ment that someone wrote they saw a poster of Emma.
This made me LOL. I could totally hear Kristen Bell’s beautiful voice saying it now. :-)
Sorry, couldn’t find the site again. I swear down, though, it said it on one site
@Mikey - Heh, it’s OK. It was probably a fake. I mean, the Wolverine poster hasn’t even come out yet!
“I love the juxtaposition between the voice speaking to Emma and the romantic shot of Kitty and Peter on the lawn. I intentionally tried to tie that shot into the last shot from #4 to sort of tie things together…”
