Best Emma Frost Moments of 2008
Indeed, 2008 definitely marks the biggest year yet for Emma Frost. Messiah CompleX shook the X-Men’s status quo in half, the long awaited finale of Astonishing X-Men finally wrapped up, and, recently, Emma Frost appeared with a secret cabal of villains at the end of Secret Invasion #8.
In mainstream media, Emma Frost topped a spot as a main character in the TV show “Wolverine and the X-Men” and appeared in a brief cameo of the upcoming X-film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
In site news, EmmaFrostFiles.com received an awesome new layout and converted the entire site to the popular CMS/blog management tool WordPress, and hit a personal record high of 652 visitors in one day.
With all that going on, Emma slowly and subtly climbed her way to one of the most popular X-Men characters (in the comics, of course).
And here’s the list of the Best Emma Frost Moments of 2008.
New X-Men #45
Written by Chris Yost and Craig Kyle
Drawn by Humberto Ramos
Description: Despite Emma’s embarrassing track record for her students’ deaths, she still cares very much for her students. Before the big battle in Messiah CompleX, Emma gave Surge a little motivational speech to boost the girl’s confidence.
X-Men #207
Written by Mike Carey
Drawn by Chris Bachalo
Description: There’s nothing better than a classic one vs one telepathic battle – except in Emma’s case, it’s two vs one. Emma distracts Exodus using her skillful telepathy while she summons Dust to “dust up” the X-villain. The outcome? Victorious, of course.
X-Men Legacy #216
Written by Mike Carey
Drawn by Scot Eaton
Description: Emma rummages through Xavier’s brain to search for any traces of Sinister. Hypocritical or not, she also gives Xavier a humiliating lesson about those hard decisions from the past. And she bitchslapped Xavier and left the poor man in tears (click for image).
Uncanny X-Men #505
Written by Matt Fraction
Drawn by Terry Dodson
Description: If there’s anyone to blame for Emma meddling with the Dark Reign masters, it’s Storm. But ultimately, it’s Emma who made the decision to step forward and protect mutantkind. And, sometimes for Emma, bypassing moral grounds is the way to do it. She’s sick and tired of standing behind Scott and letting him keep secrets from her. So, this is Emma Frost, stepping up to the plate and taking the lead. Hopefully, we readers will have a lot to look forward to in 2009.
Secret Invasion #8
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Drawn by Leinil Francis Yu
Description: Norman Assborn, Loki, Doom, Namor, The Hood, Emma Frost – Emma Frost?! It wasn’t the conclusion of Secret Invasion that shocked everyone – it was Emma Frost’s appearance at the end. Seeing Emma being respected with a rank of top class bad guys should be an award itself. And not only that, this is Emma moves Emma up the status quo.
Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men
Written by Joss Whedon
Drawn by John Cassaday
Description: Astonishing X-Men itself is a masterpiece, and Emma had many “astonishing” moments within the series. As much as it has been said, Whedon did a wonderful job in characterization and Cassaday added the finishing touch with the characters’ facial expressions.
Since Uncanny X-Men #129, Emma and Kitty’s first appearance issue, they’ve had a rivalry like cats and mice. Both characters had several tantalizing and heartbreaking scenes throughout Astonishing X-Men, and during the final moment between the two, the two finally make amends.
And, Emma, the ice cold queen made of diamond, cries. A scene such as this is why Emma Frost makes an excellent, three-dimensional character.
