IGN.com: Bendis Interviewed
IGN.com interviewed Bendis regarding the conclusion of Secret Invasion. Apparently, Emma replaced Magneto in the secret cabal of Dark Reign.
IGN Comics: Speaking of the evolution of the event, were there any major tweaks to the storyline along the way? I know sometimes you can’t reveal some because they spin into future storylines, but was there anything cut out or simply changed?
Bendis: There were a couple people I thought would be interesting Skrulls, that were on my list at the outset, we were very clear who was and was not a Skrull, but we got to the story and realized we didn’t need them. And we felt that the fewer Skrulls the better.
IGN Comics: Anyone specific?
Bendis: Yeah, Simon Williams a.k.a. Wonder Man, was supposed to be a Skrull. He was such a quieter character – the quiet, noble, easy-to-imitate guy – but there was nothing he could do that Hank Pym couldn’t. And Hank was more interesting because they kept having to switch him out. Besides I did want a line in there somewhere to say, “We were going to make you a Skrull, but you’re so boring that no one was interested, no one cared.”
We did one retreat where Quicksilver as a Skrull was a big deal. Mephisto… joking, joking. But I had my core with Elektra, Hank and Spider-Woman, and some others were a pretty big deal to my part of the story and people would pitch different Skrulls. We would listen and if it would fall apart in the room… but I would be open to it, and if it survived the retreat then we should go forward with it. A few were voted on by the room but it just didn’t connect.
Another thing that was different was the Cabal on the last page. Magneto was originally part of the group instead of Emma, but continuity just wouldn’t have it. And when we sat down, Fraction was really cool about offering Emma up. It’s funny because up until that moment I thought Namor was the most interesting person in that group, because he knew there was the mirror Illuminati gathering. But to me it became all about Emma. What is she doing there? What’s she going to do? How mad will Joss Whedon get if she’s in that room?
