Marvel.com: Fraction on Dark Reign

Matt Fraction discusses Dark Reign with Marvel.com. Emma is mentioned several times. An unlettered preview of Uncanny X-Men Annual #2 is also provided.

While Fraction gets into the mind of Iron Man, he’ll also explore the heart of Emma Frost in January’s UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #2, exploring the former White Queen’s past with Norman Osborn and Namor, among others, and how it has led her to make some interesting choices of late.

Marvel.com: Let’s shine the spotlight on the X-Men now. From the Decimation to “Messiah CompleX,” the X-Men have had it pretty rough for a while. How does Dark Reign impact them specifically?

Matt Fraction: It puts Emma in a seat at a very powerful table where she can negotiate to protect the mutant status quo with the powerful people that will be determining such things.

Marvel.com: Why did Emma even choose to ally herself with this collective?

Matt Fraction: She was offered a seat at the most powerful table in the world. And as [Cyclops has] felt himself crushed by the burdens of leading not just the X-Men but mutantkind, he’s withdrawn from her, unable to ask for help in shouldering his burden. Emma, knowing she’s being shut out and unaware of what exactly Scott is up to, is taking matters into her own hands.

Marvel.com: How do Scott and the rest of the X-Men feel about her alliance? Do they even know?

Matt Fraction: Nobody knows. Yet.

The Story:
Emma Frost has never been a simple person, nor has she had a simple past. The Hellfire Club. The Hellions. Generation X. Genosha. But you haven’t seen it all. Did you know about her history with Namor? With Tony Stark? With Norman Osborn? The X-Men have often operated on the outside of the Marvel Universe; that stops now and in this annual. Do not miss it.

Doom and Namor just walking around, I’m tempted to wonder what they’re gossiping about.

Surely you do not object to Emma using her sex appeal to get the upper hand with Namor? He does have a well-known weakness for blondes that it would be out of character for her not to take advantage of. Could be he is just checking out her hair to see if it’s the real thing, if he notices it’s straight out of a bottle I don’t think he’ll be so tempted to betray Sue, unfortunately.

@NB – Emma is clearly using her telepathic gifts to make Namor oblivious to the dark roots.

Thankfully, he no longer has Bendis-face.

I’m really looking forward to a change from the Emma/Scott formula. I tolerate the pairing, but have never been a huge fan of it. Namor and Emma — now that’s interesting.

@px – no to be quite frank i am very sick of emma and scott, cuz all he does is boss her around or act like hot @#*& with her, and i think it will be much more hotter with her and namor, cuz they both are very hot

I will be extremely surprised if the Emma and Namor interaction goes beyond flirting and/or Emma turning him down with a cutting one-liner.

@NB – I hope so! Maybe I’m overreacting to this, like always!

Nah, I hope Emma and Scott stays togheter, and I hope Emma keeps in the X-Men. She is by far the most interesting character in the X-titles.
