The Dark Avengers take on the Uncanny X-Men! Kicking off the 6-part crossover event, rising star Matt Fraction (UNCANNY X-MEN, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN) is joined by X-artist supreme Marc Silvestri (X-MEN: MESSIAH COMPLEX, CIVIL WAR: THE INITIATIVE ONE-SHOT) to bring you a story that shakes the foundations of the Marvel Universe. “Utopia” isn’t the strongest of starts to this crossover since so much of its power rests in the ending, but it is an intriguing and compelling end. Where Fraction goes from here should be interesting. Read More

Review 1: Fraction isn’t exactly breaking new ground with Dark Avengers and Uncanny X-men, but he executes so adeptly here that it almost feels like it. What’s more, he doesn’t allow Dark Reign to derail some of the themes he’s been working on since taking the helm of Uncanny in the first place. That alone makes this book stand out a bit from the pack, making it a rare reward in a crowded field of oppressive tie-ins.

Review 2:While it’s far from the most amazing comic you’ll pick up this week, for the most part Utopia does what it says on the label, setting up Marvel’s big summer crossover in an interesting, complex way. And, if nothing else, Fraction’s made a case for “Utopia” as the X-story to remember this year. Read More

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia is an engrossing story that has left me dying to get my hands on the chapters that are yet to come. Fraction does an exquisite job of building up the tension and setting up–what looks to be–an epic story, certain to be talked about. Fraction also doesn’t leave the reader waiting for everything as clashes are already shown breaking out in this issue between mutants and humans and as the first wave of Dark Avengers are sent into the fray.

Silvestri’s art is outstanding, as usual. While art quality will always depend somewhat on individual taste, Silvestri captures each individual character well, brings the action to life, and makes dynamic use of angles, distance, expressions, setting, and more. He brings a sharp edge to each X-Man and Dark Avenger, leaving me sure that he was definitely the right artist for this project. Read More

I felt that this issue was too much exposition and not enough action. I understand that this book opens a crossover, but there need to be a climax within the opening issue. The gay theme was pushed a bit strong, but generally good especially for the fact that we got to see more of the gay peeps of the X-Men. Silvestri was generally wonderful, but Fraction sort of fell flat. For more of my thoughts Click here.

In Summary: Thoughts on this crossover opener are generally favorable, but most seem to think that Fraction could’ve done a bit more.

  1. This cover confuses me a bit. It shows Emma fallen with the other X-Men. Does this imply that she fights against the Dark Avengers??

    @FoxxFireArt – Read the issue. ;) Or here:
Looks like Emma and the rest of the X-Men are being mindcontrolled by Norman and his lackeys. Not quite sure though…really don’t know what happened.
I didn’t quite like the issue. It was definitely an improvement over the lame Sisterhood arc, and I actually read the whole issue without skipping the non-Emma parts. I’m basically just mad over the whole situation that the X-Men are in. If anyone’s to blame now, it’s Emma. And she’s a smart cookie…then again, I think Fraction knows that, so she’ll probably have something up her sleeve.

    Enna and Scott are seriously digging their own graves by now. These two have crapped up beyond repair, and I look forward to seeing them fix it up. But that bit at the end. means what, they’re replacing the real X-men and passing the fakes off?

    i dont believe emma is being mind controlled…she wouldnt let that happen..whatever that xavier is..im sure shell know ..maybe theres some relation to the shadowy figure norman once introduced to the cabal..and i do hope shes got something up her sleeve..cause her erratic behaviour …even with the students..gotta mean shes got something up..its probably that old saying..something like when u wanna fool ur enemy, gotta fool ur friends first..
    but i dunno if i liked her dialogue with osborn..che changed to fast into the dark outfit..i guess she got a glipse of his mind when he said ” think big, emma”…

    @Aimee
    Well, if true I doubt Emma would take that well. Though who could you really get to pull off that trick?
