I’m not sure how much Uncanny X-Men #514 really does to improve the overall worth of “Utopia” as a crossover, but it’s an enjoyable issue that stands on its own – especially if you’re like me and have an affinity for seeing lesser-used characters shine. It also goes some way in selling the new Dark X-Men as a legitimate team, which is quite the accomplishment. Read More

As it continues, the Uncanny X-Men/Dark Avengers crossover “Utopia” reveals itself as less a story and more an ongoing promise of big things to come. Take the fourth part, the subject of this review, one “Uncanny X-Men” #514: nothing actually happens. Without getting into it too much, Cyclops sets his plan in motion, while the Dark X-Men confront a horde of Simon Trask’s human Sentinels, and both of those events merely work to suggest that actual important events will happen at some point in the future, maybe in part five, more likely in the finale of the crossover. Whilst this issue provides some decent enough action sequences and a couple of nice character moments, it’s difficult to escape the sense that this is an editorially-mandated and hollow crossover that doesn’t quite fit in with the direction that Fraction was taking Uncanny X-Men in previous issues. Perhaps it would have been more compelling as a more focused, streamlined story, but the presence of so many different players (check out all the headshots on that recap page!) makes it feel as though the book is simply cramming as many characters in as possible, and the book struggles to really convey the high stakes of the conflict, preferring to substitute endless fight scenes and repetitive action for any real depth of storytelling. This issue is mundane. Nothing happens. Emma is becoming less and less herself as shown by Aimee here. The cast is now so way too big and it’s just a mess of slowly moving crap. For more of my thoughts on this issue, Click here.

In Summary: While all reviewers seem to be in agreement about an overwhelming cast and not much happening, their stars seem not to be in agreement because reviewers are too often more nice than they should be.

  1. Ok I read this issue, your full review and Aimee’s thoughts and I’m agree with you in some things.

1.- Fraction is killing Uncanny Xmen with awful dialogs, horrible characterization and lack of originality (still using some of Morrison’s quotes? please you’re supposed to be a “writer” use your brain!)

2.- What happened to the Stepford Cuckoos? they are so different now…

3.- Psylocke’s new costume is horrible, her new exiles costume was much better. The ninja Psylocke also would look better.

But I like that Emma is a little sensitive now, I like the Ice Queen and everything else, but I think that is really good that she is more kind now.

Obviously, I hope that she would not become too sensitive or kind, and that she still is the crazy cold bitch that we love, but a little bit of heart doesn’t hurt anyone.

By the way, I loved your “Tracking the Cameo Queens” series :)

There certainly didn’t seem to be much Emma news that came out of this issue.
