IGN interviews Fraction: What’s after Utopia?

IGN interviews Matt Fraction and asks about the aftermath of Utopia and the upcoming issue of “Dark X-Men: The Confession” with Emma Frost and Cyclops. Marvel also reveals a preview of “Uncanny X-Men: Nation X.” Plus, Fraction makes more comments about Emma’s current diamond form dilemma.

From IGN:
Uncanny X-Men Nation XThe X-Men are rarely treated to moments of peace and quiet, but 2009 has been an especially loud and hectic year for the merry mutants. For the past several months, Cyclops and his team have clashed with Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers. Readers saw Emma Frost seemingly betray her teammates and a new team of government sanctioned “Dark” X-Men brought together.

[...]

We turned to Fraction to learn more about the post-Exodus direction of Uncanny X-Men. How will this new base affect the X-Men’s mission and their interaction with the world at large? Will Emma be able to reclaim her place as team leader? How will Magneto react to seeing dozens of mutants living in his former house? Fraction addressed all these topics and many more, even teasing the events of next week’s Dark Reign: The List – X-Men.

IGN Comics: If we take The Confession out of the picture, what should the readers take away from Scott and Emma’s relationship in Exodus? Are they on firm footing again, or did all those secrets take their toll?

Fraction: I think you’ve presented a false choice, or rather, the answer is none of the above. Of course the secrets take their toll. The Confession is central to the events of Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men, but I don’t know that it’s essential reading. All the readers really need to know is that Scott and Emma are on the same page. Now, that might be uncomfortable and awkward, and there’s definitely lot of repair work that needs to be done between the two of them. It’s been a pretty rocky year. But their inalienable trust in one another was firmly in place the entire time. That’s the most important take-away, I think. It’s not like a second honeymoon. There’s still damage left to be repaired, but hopefully there’s no new damage being caused.

Dark X-Men: The ConfessionIGN Comics: And I guess that was one of the big reveals of these final two issues – that they’ve been working in tandem throughout this whole thing.

Fraction: It was at least that they were working in blind faith with one another. Sort of the ultimate trust fall. [laughs]

IGN Comics: As far as the rest of the team goes, do they view things in the same way? Do they feel a certain betrayal from Emma for siding with Osborn, even if she was working in their best interests the entire time?

Fraction: She’s never been the most trusted person. This didn’t help that. We’ll see that play out in the weeks and months to come. What’ll be interesting to see is whether there are people who used to trust her and now suddenly don’t, or vice versa. Were there always people who were somewhat suspicious who now realize the depth of sacrifice she was willing to make for the team. You know, Wolverine saying, “We never doubted you for a second” is pretty telling.

IGN Comics: I’m curious about the ramifications of certain events in the battle. After Emma sends the Sentry screaming into space we see that she has a small piece of the Void inside her head.

Fraction: She didn’t really send the Sentry into space. The Sentry overcame the Void. What she managed to do was contain the Void just long enough for the Sentry’s consciousness to kick back in and realize what was happening. All she needed to do was get the Sentry/Void off the table for a few minutes. But yeah, then there’s a sliver of the Void left inside of her.

IGN Comics: And that’s development we should look towards to pop up again in the series?

Fraction: Oh yeah. That’s a huge thing. The X-Men’s omega class telepath has just been taken off the board. She’s stuck in diamond form. As long as she’s in diamond form she doesn’t have access to her psychic powers, and neither does the Void. Lest the Void gain access to Emma’s abilities, she has to stay in diamond form to keep everyone safe.

IGN Comics: We’ve just had Emma and Namor give Osborn a giant middle finger. The Hood is pretty much out of the game now, and Doom and Loki are sort of off in the corner cooking up their own little schemes. Have we basically seen the end of Osborn’s Cabal now?

Fraction: Not the end of it, but it sure seems like it’s starting to come apart.

Wow, that’s pretty bad for a writer to say about a book. That you can miss reading this and not lose anything. That’s pretty much saying nothing in this book will effect anything that you don’t already know.

He is seriously pushing that ‘omega class’ thing pretty hard.

I like the cover (and Land is not my favorite for sure)
At this point (to me), every single interview of Fraction is a joke, a pointless joke… he didn’t say anything at the end!

(Reply and Quote seems to be out of order?)

    @FoxxFireArt:
Well, it’s not his book is it now? :)

Hopefully he just did not think that statement through and consider the implications before he said it. In an objective sense he’s right of course, it’s not essential, basically just another thing that happened off-screen in his stories. I’m still looking forward too it though, it might even be better than the main story.
