IGN writes a new feature that highlights several key characters in the final days of Dark Reign. They write their own predictions about Emma’s future and also interview Matt Fraction and Brian Michael Bendis.

Emma Frost
Alias: The White Queen
First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #129 (1980)
Basic Powers: Emma Frost is one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet. Her secondary mutation allows her to assume a diamond-like form with increased strength and near-invulnerability, though her psychic powers are blocked in this state.

Did You Know: Grant Morrison originally intended to use Colossus as one of the major protagonists in his New X-Men run. When Colossus was killed in a preceding storyline, Morrison chose to replace him with Emma. Her new diamond form was at least partially inspired as a replacement for Colossus’ abilities.

Dark Reign So Far: Emma Frost began her costumed career as an antagonist to the X-Men. So it’s understandable that, despite her change of heart and her years of loyal service to the team, many of the X-Men refuse to trust her. Emma’s past year has been one of hidden secrets and inner strife. When her boyfriend Cyclops kept the existence of X-Force secret, Emma countered by striking a clandestine bargain with Norman Osborn.

By joining the Cabal, Emma assured HAMMER’s protection of the world’s dwindling mutant population. Osborn’s deal was simple – “You keep the mutants quiet and we’ll stay out of your business”. Unfortunately, when tensions flared in San Francisco, Osborn was forced to intervene. He formed his own government-sanctioned squad of X-Men with Emma as their leader.

Emma of all people knows how quickly alliances can change. Even as Osborn schemed, she struck a secret pact with fellow Cabal member Namor. The two betrayed Osborn and rejoined Cyclops’ X-Men before the crucial battle between the two teams. Emma is back where she belongs, though many of her teammates question her motives even more. And with a fragment of The Void lodged in her mind, Emma is forced to remain in her cold, emotionless diamond state on a constant basis.

The Future of Emma Frost
With Brian Michael Bendis & Matt Fraction

On joining the Cabal:

Bendis: “Originally Magneto was going to be in the Cabal, but that was troublesome for what Matt was doing over in Uncanny X-Men. It just didn’t fit. And someone threw out Emma. When I first considered the Cabal, I figured the person people would say “Huh?!” over would be Namor, but when we brought Emma in, the whole special got rewritten to be from Emma’s point of view. She was suddenly the most interesting person in the room, because she was sleeping with the Devil to get what she wanted. She was making a very, very hard choice. And we saw that get worked out in Utopia.”

Fraction: “She has the problem of going through Dark Reign and a bad patch with her boyfriend at the same time. She knew that Scott was keeping things from her. That sort of inspired her to take the table and got her into the Cabal. It made her take a leadership initiative because she was concerned about the fate of her people and what Osborn running the show meant for mutants. It allowed Emma to put on more of a mercenary pose for a while.”

On Emma’s brush with villainy:

Fraction: “It’s easy to forget her roots sometimes and who she was when we first met her as a character. She was this very “by any means necessary” figure. She’s a woman concerned with the safety and training of mutants, even when that makes her look like a villain. It allowed her to put on these old poses and this old outfit, literally and figuratively. Ultimately, it had the result of pushing her and Scott closer together and making the X-Men more of a presence and a threat than they have been in a very long time, at least to Osborn’s status quo.”
